The Effects Loop on the back of an amp head is for separating the "modulation" pedals (like delay or chorus, etc.) from other types of pedals like your tuner or distortion.
On my board, I have my tuner and Distortion pedal going into the front of the amp. But I have my chorus, POG, envelope filter, and EQ going through the effects loop.
That's pretty standard for most guitarist/Bassist pedalboards.

The effect loop is to use exteernal effect module... It is NOT to use guitar pedals !!!! The signals are line levels, NOT guitar type levels. An example of a device might be an Alesis Quadraverb. You take the effect send jack and run it into the inout of the effects module and the output of the effects module into the effects return jack. Many try to use guitar pedals and massive distortion results because levels are too high for the pedals.

Pedals operate at a different level then rack units that go in the effects loop.
It needs to go in front of the amp input. Guitar to pedal to amp input.

I have a Peavey XR-600 PA Head, I would like to know if and how can I connect a MX 200 Dual Reverb Effects Processor to the PA Head?
If it has a effects loop output and input on the p.a. head and a in and out on the reverb effects processor, then yes you can, just run the effects loop output signal into the input on your reverb processor, out of the output back into the input effects loop on the p.a. head, kinda like you would a effects pedal thru the effects loop of a guitar amplifier. hope this helps!

Do you run a compressor in the effects loop?
Yes. I run all my modulation pedals into the compressor, then into the MXR Ten Band EQ, then into the effects loop. But it also works in the front of the amp as well to tighten up your distortion. Try it both ways and find the sound you like best.

That is the way it is supposed to work... It is a level control to control the level sent to an EXTERNAL effects unit. What external effects unit are you using? Brand and model please. If you proportion more to the effects loop, you want to make sure the EXTERNAL effects unit is on and its gain controls are up. The foot switch input should control the EXTERNAL effects unit when you plug the footswitch into the EXTERNAL unit. The footswitch input on the amp itself has NOTHING to do with the external effect loop, it only affects the amp's own DFX unit.

The loop and the manual tone store functionality !
Usually the loop in is used with an EXTERNAL effects module where the audio signal is "looped" out through the external effect module and then back to the power amp to drive the speaker in the cabinet. The LOOP IN jack would receive signal from the EFFECTS module OUT jack.

The source to go TO the effects module INPUT may come from a jack such as preamp out, or sometimes the same loop jack if it usess the TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connection method.

If you do not have an external effects module, all this is a moot point in your case.

No sound unless a plug is partially inserted into the effects loop jack.
The switch that is a part of the effects loop jack is making poor contact.

Open the unit and ALSO check the soldering of the jack pins.

MANY of these have a contact as part of the strip that contacts the plug. This spring strip often gets weakened and doesn't contact the metal contact below. The contact "forwards" the preamp to the power amplifier. If the contact doesn't quite make, no power will get to the power amp. If the jack is bad, you MIGHT also try a jumper plug. You MIGHT be able to bend the contact to get moore force as a repair.


If it is a mono 1/4 jack, then use a short jumper from the FX send to the return is another non-invasive fix..

IF it is a TRS type effects loop, plug in a plug that has the Tip and the Ring jumpered in the plug as a quick fix.

In general the jacks in these guitar amps are JUNK !!!
