The probem as told on another site (sorry, can't remember to give proper credit) is that the pinch roller is not making contact with the capstan. THis is exacly what happened to my 1800 after sitting for a long time with no use. THe solution was to manually excersize the lever going to the solenoid to unstick the mechanism. Then, voila, pinch roller pinches, tape moves, UVW1800 happy again.
Yes That is right bad contact pinch roller against capstan motor.
the servo most of the time the shaft that holds the pinch roller
needs lubrication, or the top of the pinch roller cap has spun around and making a wedge between the capstan and the fork from the pinch roller press assy make sure that the black top is in the right angle.
