Canon only lists three 4-digit error codes for the MP500: 1700, 1851, and 1856. After much research and finding many other MP500 owners getting this same strange code, I have come to conclude that it's the code of DEATH. Sometimes you may get strange codes if using compatible ink cartridges. Unless you can get the printer to reset and clear, the only other thing to try is to go back to the Canon driver download page and reload the correct driver: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=11995

Error Code 5010: Canon recommends resetting the machine. Unplug the power cord for 10 seconds. Then press the power button to turn the printer back on. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.
5010 is a scanner error, either worn out scan lamp or sensors. Canon only replaces the entire scan assembly, if you like I can get part number and price.
That code is a scanner error. The scanner unit can not detect the home position or the scanner unit warming up is not done properly at power on. Most of the time the Scanner unit needs to be replaced.
There's no specific info on a 5010 error even on Canon website, but ANY error in between
5000-9999 needs Canon's attention, so if it's under warranty, get a replacement.
