Gmail for Web (accessed via browsers directly) brings the latest version to your PC/Laptop. You dont need to do anything for it. You can however get more information by tweaking your settings or enabling certain Google Labs features.
To enable spam counts etc.
Go to Settings on the top right hand corner of the page. Within Settings go to the label marked as Labs.
You will see a list of features that will be enabled or disabled for GMail. Browse the list and choose Hide Unread Count
This enables additional info for each folder and will show you spam counts.
