Notepad is not meant for viewing formatted html or other help files other than TXT files.
You may have accidentally changed an association.
to change it back for html lets say then right click on the file then use "open with" then "select program from list"
when the list opens scroll down and click "internet explorer" and tick the "always use this application" box
