The CRC error is a data error on your software installation disk. If the software is on a CD check the CD for dirty marks and scratches, if necessary get a replacement CD. If it was downloaded from the Internet then download it again.

Error 04 is a CD Problem its either need to be clean or CD inserted upside down
if there is no media inside try to clean with a cd cleaner it should help unless the laser unit is not good
I have a R3000 and after many years of usage many things happen and add to your hard drive. It can be a number of things from not enough hard drive space for your cache file to bad installed drivers.
I would suggest a full format and install using the backup disk that Compaq sent with the system. You should have the WinXP code on the bottom of the computer. This way you get a 100% clean system. You will have to reinstall any additional software such as MS Office or your virus scanner.

The problem might be the battery itself. Four years is a long time for rechargeables. Also, check if the error ocurs when the battery is not in the slot.
