Keep typing in random screen unlock codes (3 or 4 times).
After the 4th fail it should reset to Factory Default settings which will mean you need to link it to a wifi connection and then link it to your Amazon account.
Frankly, if this does not work then you have purchased a small, rather elegant but expensive door stop :(

If the device was bought brand new then there is no reason to ask for a password unless you are setting it up and the password is for security reasons. If the device was bought used, please contact the previous owner and ask for the password.
