Error E 74

Ive had my xbox 360 for about a year and a half now and it has worked great until just a couple of weeks ago...when i turn my xbox on now all it shows is the bottom right ring light flashing red and E 74 appears on the screen. I looked it up and was told that it was a problem with the a/v cable, but i tried other a/v cables that belong to my friend and it still doesnt work. i figured that maybe that it was the a/v component inside the xbox i.e. the chip. i no longer have a warranty on my xbox so microsoft will not help. does anyone have any advice for me? is there a way i could acquire another chip and replace it? thanks for any help I purchases a refurbished xbox for my son for christmas. He was able to use the xbox for about 2 weeks and then lost video. It was sent back and a new unit(I think) was sent. When we got the new unit with in 5 minutes the color started changing, so my son turned it off and came back later and we got an E74 message. The unit was sent back again. We just got a returned unit. Turned it on used it for maybe 10 minutes needed to leave, when we came back, we turned on the xbox and got the E74 message. I am tired of sending it back, only to have the same problem occur. Can you help me?

The heatsink on the processor needs removed, cleaned of the old thermal paste, and reapply new thermal paste. There our a ton of videos on YouTube on opening your xbox, and also on the issue of what to do when you get it open. I found it wouldn't work untill I started the xbox without the heatsink on, so it would give me two red lights. That was the only way to "reset it" in a way. It had only been a week so far, but so far so good and no problems as of yet. I would not recommend the towell thing. That's like fixing a roof with bubble gum and duct tape.

  1. Turn off the console, disconnect all the cables, and then reconnect all the cables. Turn the console back on.
  2. Turn off the console, and then disconnect any accessories that are connected. For example, disconnect any Xbox 360 controllers, Xbox 360 Memory Units, and the Xbox 360 Hard Drive. With the accessories disconnected, restart the console to see whether the problem still occurs. This can help you determine whether the console or an accessory is experiencing the problem.
  3. If you continue to experience this problem, contact Xbox Customer Service.
