Here's a video guide with how to install the processor onto your board assuming you already bought the processor :) As long as the processor is made for Socket-H it will do.

As you have stated it's a Compaq Presario S0000/S8000 SERIES desktop computer.

One of the S0000/S8000 series.
Without knowing the exact model number I have no idea of what hardware is installed on the motherboard.

On the back of the computer tower, or up on the side, is a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number. This is the exact model number I need.

Also; Going to HP Support with the exact model number may not reveal the info I need, either.
They may not list the specifications, and therefore the installed hardware, for your computer.
There is an easy way around this, however.
Use CPU-Z from CPUID.com

What info is needed in order to know if the Processor can be upgraded:

A) Processor Socket: What processor socket is installed on the motherboard. This is what the Processor sits in.

Just two examples for Intel processors; Socket 478, and LGA 775 processor socket.

With this style of processor socket, the processor socket has the socket holes, and the processor has the contact pins. (478 holes/478 pins)

With this style of processor socket, the socket has the pins, while the processor has contact pads.

There are other styles of Intel processor sockets. There are also AMD processors which can be used, and have many different processor sockets also.


B) What motherboard chipset is used.
Specifically, what Northbridge chip is used.

For your motherboard the motherboard chipset is a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip.

{So aptly named Northbridge, and Southbridge, for the relation of how they sit on the motherboard.
Looking at a motherboard as if it were a map, the Processor sits to the North.

The Northbridge chip sits close to the Processor.
The Southbridge chip sits to the 'South' on the motherboard }

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.

There are no fuses. try removeing the one of the memorys and then both. insert the old memory and see if it starts up.

Lotes manufactured many styles of processor sockets.

More information is needed.
If this in reference to a laptop computer;

A) What is the manufacturer name, and Model Number of the laptop? (Bottom of the laptop)

B) What letter/numbers do you see on the Processor socket? (IF you are looking at it on the motherboard)

C) What Processor is installed? (IF you know)

There's more to it than just knowing what Processor socket is on the motherboard.
The main information needed is what Northbridge chip is used, PLUS what processor socket is installed on the motherboard.

Hi. I'm currently installing my intel core i5 processor chip to my gigabyte z68ma-d2h-b3 motherboard. Somehow the chip won't sit in correctly. Is this normal by any chance?

GIGABYTE Z68MZ-D2H-B3 motherboard has LGA1155 Socket

It could all be down to your motherboard clock/jumper settings. You need to check out your motherboard user manual.

If you don't have one, go to your motherboard manufacturer's website, follow links for support and downloads. You should be able to get a .pdf copy there.

Also bear in mind the type of processor chip you have, If I remember correctly, these chips can have either the Northwood or the Prescott processor chip. Some motherboards are compatible with only the one,

A) At the top middle is the Processor socket. White in color, rectangular in shape, square hole in the middle, and socket holes on it.

To the immediate left of the Processor socket are 8 Electrolytic Capacitors in a row.
These capacitors are Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors. (Used all over the motherboard)

These particular 8 are part of the motherboard voltage regulator circuit.
Specifically, voltage regulation for the Processor.

B) To the right of the Processor socket are three long Black Ram Memory slots. (Proper computer speak for Slot, is Bank. 3 Ram Memory Banks)

C) The Blue and the White connectors to the right of the Ram Memory slots are IDE connectors.
One for the Harddrive, the other one for the optical drive/s.

D) Underneath the Processor is the Northbridge chip. There is a clear fan sitting on it.

E) The large square Black chip with VIA on it, below the Ram Memory slots, and to the right of the purple PCI slots, is the Southbridge chip.

F) The 5 purple long slots are PCI expansion slots.

G) To the right of the bottom purple PCI slot is the CMOS battery.

H) Above the purple PCI slots is a brown AGP slot.

It looks as though my resources were incorrect, as far as the two motherboards having the same processor socket.
(MSI RS480M uses a Socket 754)

What does concern me, is if the motherboard chipset used is the same. This was the stated information.

The motherboard chipset consists of the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.

Let's go back to basics, and see what Northbridge chip is on your motherboard.
Two ways.
One, it looks as though you may be using a tiny program such as CPU-Z, or Belarc Advisor.

If not, I would advise downloading the free, tiny program CPU-Z from CPUID.com
Can you install the old processor, (AMD Athlon 2.25GHz), and get your computer to work, or are you using it now?

After you have CPU-Z running, left-click on the Mainboard tab, and tell me what it states for Chipset. Also tell me what it states for Southbridge.

Second way.
Physically look at the Northbridge, and Southbridge chip. IF, they are not covered with a heatsink.

The Northbridge chip is usually a large chip, and is located close to the processor socket.
Most configurations are like this; Processor socket at the top of the motherboard, ram memory slots to the right, Northbridge chip below the processor socket.

Motherboard designers put the Southbridge chip all over the place. There is no usual spot.

It is my belief at the moment, that your Northbridge chip will not support dual core processors, such as an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Only Single core processors.
Once I know what Northbridge chip you have, we can determine what your CPU support is.

you obviously seem to have the adequate knolledge so why dont you overclock it...
overclocking used to be a touchy subject but know its undrstood that that it creates no problems..the chips are designed to be overclocked,in fact overclocked should now not be the trerminology for it ...it was called overclocking cos then it wasnt natural and created unstable systems ..now it is merely enhancing .
