I had the same problem with my nuvi 200. I contacted Garmin via phone (toll-free number) and the tech was very helpful. He said that this happened when I was updating because the program was interrupted while the update was in process. The problem is because I needed the USB drivers for updating--don't know how they got deleted but once he sent me an email with the instructions and attached zip file to reinstall the drivers and reset machine, everything is good to go again.

Same problem. The manual and Garmin website are useless. This is brand new and was a gift. I would never purchase a Garmin.

I have a nuvi 750 went to update maps now screen reads system software missing.
I have exactly the same problem you have described. I tried to register and update my Garmin sat nav and all the software has been wiped.
