When the computer is turned on, both the on and standby lights stay on, there is a continous whirring noise and the monitor is blank and stays in power saving mode. please help!!
Assuming you get 2 beeps on boot up, take the side off your pc and see if the whirring sound is coming from your hardrive, if so you may have a damaged sector on your hardrive where the boot sector is.
If you have a Windows XP disc come back here, if not you need to take your hardrive to a friends pc and set your hardrive as the slave drive before connecting up.
When booted up go to My computer and right click on your hard drive (could be 'D' drive or 'E' or 'F')depending on other pc.
Go down to properties then tools tab and click error checking and let the system check for errors and automatically repair them.
