ERROR: code 402 in LED panel

When I turn on my camera, the camera beeps and the shows 402 in the LED panel. What could the problem be?

Error code 402 indicates an issue with the SmartMedia card. Make sure that the memory card is properly inserted into the camera. If the card is not the one that was originally packaged with your camera, check to make sure that it meets the camera's requirements. The PDC 640 digital camera accommodates SmartMedia cards at 2 MB, 4 MB and 8 MB capacities. If the condition persists after checking the above, the SmartMedia card may be faulty or corrupted and in need of replacement.
